Country Gingham Tea Towel
Errata: As of 08-16-07 the pdf still reflects the uncorrected pattern. As soon as I make the changes I’ll indicate it here.
- The grid stitch section is actually 13 rows. The chart reflects this correctly. The written instruction do not. After the 3 repeats of grid stitch, Row 1, with Color B, is repeated once more, before starting the Gingham Stitch with the Setup row on the WS.
- Right now the instructions say:
Setup Row 1: With B, k1 *k5, kwp4 (5x),* end k1.
Row 2 (etc): With A, k1, *k5 (wyif sl1, wyib sl1) 2x, wyif sl1* end k1.
It should say:
Don’t turn the work after the setup row. Things won’t line up, you’d have to shift your stitches, cut the yarn and weave ends. (eek.)
Setup Row 1: (RS) With B, k1 *k5, kwp4 (5x),* end k1.
Row 2 (etc): (Still RS, don’t turn the work) With A, k1, *k5 (wyif sl1, wyib sl1) 2x, wyif sl1* end k1.”
Tips that may help with the Gingham stitch:
It’s the same 11 rows over and over again. In this case, there are two colors, offset to make the gingham pattern. Row 11 is always the set up for the color change. Because it’s an odd number of rows, the first time you use a color you’re working it on the right side, but the next time you come to that color it will have to be worked from the wrong side since the yarn is carried up the side as you go. If you cut the yarn, you could work all the repeats from the front if you wanted to. (If you look at middle of the the chart, you’ll notice the repeats never change, though in the written instructions the knits and purls, etc. are reversed.) I hate weaving in ends, so I carry when possible.
In this pattern there are two colors. So, the first 22 rows work the pattern from the right side. The next 22 work the pattern from the wrong side.
