Scenes from the 2009 Arden Fair
Every year the tiny village of Arden invites people to celebrate the end of summer with a craft fair featuring arts, theatre, music and food. For people not familiar with Arden, it’s a unique community in Delaware based on the ideas of Henry George who championed amongst other things, a single tax system and promoted the idea that we own what we create, but the land and nature is something that we must protect and are all responsible for as a community. There’s more about that on the Arden site. Incidently, George also invented Monopoly. The original board for the Landlord Game is on display at the Craft Shop Museum if you ever happen to be in the area. Other than progressive politics, Arden is particularIy known for its artist community. If you are interested in learning about Arden and its neighbors Ardencroft and Ardentown they are certainly as fascinating as the neighborhoods are beautiful, and an intriguing example of a successful community that has resisted the cookie-cutter mentality of modern suburbs for over 100 years.
